Bodybugg Update

by Jen on January 11, 2010

Before Christmas, I wrote about the new Bodybugg I had ordered online. I anxiously waited until Christmas morning when I was finally able to open it up and try it. Well….I’ve been using it for just over 2 weeks…and I’m loving it!

This little gadget is great. I love tracking calories consumed and calories burned. I used to track my calories through an online website. However, I had to enter each activity I did that day and I discovered that it often overestimated or underestimated my calories burned. But with the Bodybugg, I know exactly (with 95% accuracy) the total number of calories I’m burning!

When you buy the Bodybugg, you also get a 6 month subscription to their web program. With this program, you can download your information from the actual Bodybugg; calories burned, steps taken, activity time, etc. You also enter what you have eaten that day….and I mean everything you’ve eaten that day! Then you compare your calories consumed to your calories eaten. If your goal is to maintain your weight (like me) then your calories burned versus your calories consumed should be pretty close to equal. If you want to lose weight, then you need to aim for approximately a 500 calorie deficit each day (i.e. burn 500 calories more than you eat). If you do this everyday then you should lose 1 pound per week.

You can also enter “custom” foods such as recipes you use or foods that aren’t in their gigantic list of foods. The website also tracks the amount of protein, fat, and carbs you are consuming as well as other things like calcium, fibre, and sodium. It also gives you a sample daily menu based on your food preferences and exercise goals. There is nothing this thing can’t do….besides changing dirty diapers!

Like I said, I’m not trying to lose weight but rather maintain it. And I’ve learned in the past 2 years that it’s not about “dieting”, it’s about a lifestyle change. Before I had Ben, I would pig out and then diet, pig out, diet, pig out, diet. I was in a constant battle with food.

However, recently I’ve discovered that I need to change the way I feel about food. I can’t binge on junk food and then diet. I need to think about my health. I need to eat healthy EACH DAY!

Yes there are days I still struggle. Yes I want to eat half the chocolate cake. Yes I want a whole bag of M&M’s. And sometimes I do let myself indulge. But when I do it’s just a little, it’s not half the cake! I’ve gotten to the point that I couldn’t eat half the cake, even if I tried! My stomach can’t handle it anymore.

I haven’t had fast food in years. Because of this, I no longer crave it and I no longer want that grease in my body. My body can’t take that kind of abuse anymore.

The most common New Year’s resolution is to lose weight. However, I think the best resolution is to be healthy. It’s not about a diet. It’s about a lifestyle. And I truly think the Bodybugg is helping me maintain this desire. I would recommend it to anyone who also wants to live a healthy lifestyle. Why not use all the tools around you to achieve this!

And no….Bodybugg isn’t paying me a dime for this review.
