Chicken Parmesan Burgers

by Jen on July 5, 2012

It’s burger season around these parts…

However, I’ve never been a fan of big, juicy beef burgers.  It’s just too much meat for my tastes (much to the displeasure of my carnivore husband!)  So we meet in the middle.  I make chicken or turkey burgers, and we are both happy.  Well, okay, I’m a little bit happier than him about it, but whatever, I’m doing the cooking around here so I get the final say.

So, a plain ol’ chicken burger, although good, just won’t cut it.  It needs to be pretty tasty for the family to enjoy it.  Which is why, after much success with my Chicken Parmesan Meatloaf, I decided to turn it into a burger!

I absolutely love the flavor of this burger.  Seasoned tomato sauce, sweet basil, a juicy burger, and melted cheese sandwiched in between a whole wheat bun.  Talk about yummy.

And let’s not forget how healthy these are compared to your traditional burger.  I used:

  • extra lean ground chicken
  • whole wheat breadcrumbs
  • low-sodium marinara sauce
  • part-skim mozzarella cheese
  • whole wheat sandwich thin

Chicken Parmesan Burgers

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 18 minutes

Total Time: 28 minutes

Yield: 4 burgers

Serving Size: 1 burger

  • 1 lb. extra lean ground chicken (or turkey)
  • 1 egg white
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat bread crumbs
  • 1/2 tsp each thyme, basil, and oregano
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup chopped parsley
  • dash of sea salt and pepper
  • 1/2 cup low-sodium marinara sauce
  • sliced part-skim mozzarella cheese
  • fresh basil
  • 4 sandwich thins

  1. Preheat grill to medium heat.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix together ground chicken, egg white, breadcrumbs, thyme, basil, oregano, garlic, onion, parsley, salt and pepper. Form into 4 patties. (The patties will be wet, so be sure to spray your grill with oil before placing the burgers on.)
  3. Grill burgers until cooked through, approximately 15 - 18 minutes. (I like to top mine with cheese during the last few minutes of grilling so that the cheese gets all gooey and melted.)
  4. On the bottom half of each bun, spread some marinara sauce and place a couple of basil leaves on top. Top with burger, cheese, and other half of bun.

The verdict?  I already told you I loved them, but the whole family loved them too.  For the kids, I left the big leaves of basil off and just put on the marinara sauce and cheese.  But for the adults…leave the basil ON!

These burgers are so easy to whip up on a hot summer day.  I bet you even have all of the ingredients in your house (and garden) right now!  Serve these burgers with a side salad or some crisp, fresh veggies and you’ve got yourself a complete meal.
