The resolution to lose weight is one of the most common resolutions people make at the first of the year, just go to a gym in January and you’ll see what I mean. But few people will actually meet their goals. If you have included losing weight on your resolution list, here are five tips to keep your weight loss resolutions and meet your goals.
1. Break Your Resolutions Into Smaller Pieces
Large weight loss or fitness goals can be hard to meet. If you set a resolution to lose 50 pounds or be able to run a 5K by a certain date, break those bigger resolutions into smaller pieces. A smaller goal is more easily attained than a larger goal. Instead of focusing on the total amount of weight you need to lose, set a goal of losing 5 pounds at a time.
2. Put Your Resolutions Where You Can See Them
If you have losing weight on your New Year’s resolution list, use sticky notes or reminders on your phone to keep those resolutions visible. Writing down your resolution to lose weight one time and then never looking at it again makes it easy to forget about how important losing weight really is to you. Put sticky notes or index cards with your resolutions on your refrigerator, your bathroom mirror, or attached to your computer screen.
3. Set Up a Reward System
Use non-food rewards to give yourself a virtual pat on the back when you meet one of your weight loss resolutions. Give yourself a reward for each 5 pounds lost or each fitness goal met. Healthy, non-food rewards can include a movie date with a friend, a new piece of clothing, or a new book.
4. Keep Track of Your Progress
If your resolution involves losing a lot of weight, keep track of every pound you lose as an incentive to keep going. Make a graph on your computer so you can visually see your weight go down or utilize a weight loss app for your smartphone. Other ways to track your progress include measuring your waist, being able to fit into a smaller sized clothing item, or reaching a fitness goal.
5. Believe in Yourself
Believing you can meet your weight loss resolutions can make a difference in your ability to reach your goals. As a weight loss coach, I can attest to the power of positive thinking. When you believe you can achieve your desired weight, you have a more positive outlook on your weight loss experience and are not afraid of setbacks. Remind yourself that you can lose weight, you can meet your fitness goals, and you are capable of taking the steps necessary to make those goals a reality.
You can stay on track and achieve your weight loss resolutions with dedicated effort. Once you make your resolutions, be sure to record your progress, reward yourself for a job well done, remind yourself of your resolutions, and believe that you can meet your goals. Remember that weight loss takes time and effort. By breaking your resolutions into manageable pieces, you can see steady progress and meet your goals.
