Have you tried a specific “diet” before?
I know, that’s probably a silly question. I think we have ALL tried a “diet” at least once in our lives.
I was the queen of diets a few years ago. I tried them all – Acai Berry pills, Cabbage Soup Diet, Lemon Juice Cleanse, the 21 Day Fix…
And guess what happened, I lost weight initially, but then I ended up gaining it all back and MORE!
Why Do Diets Fail?
Let’s be honest – ALL diets work! There is no doubt you can lose weight drinking nothing but lemon and cayenne water. There is no doubt you can lose weight portioning your food into little colour coded containers. The fact is, you will lose weight on a “diet.”
I don’t feel that the diets are the problem.
What are the problems:
- We are told to restrict calories so much that we can’t be expected to eat so little for such long periods of time. So when we go off of the diet, we balloon back to our old weight once we start eating more food.
- There are so many rules to stick to that the diet becomes so complicated and hard to maintain over a long period of time.
I’ve worked with hundreds of women over the past few years, and I’m ashamed to say that in the past, I’ve even told them to follow a rigid plan to help them lose weight.
What always ends up happening is this:
- The women lose weight initially and feel really good.
- After two months, most of the women start posting about their “cheats” and “treats” that they just can’t seem to stop craving.
- After four months, 90% of the women have lost motivation to continue with the plan and end up going back to their old, unhealthy style of eating.
What does this evidence tell me?
The more rules there are to follow in a specific diet plan, the harder it is to stick to over the long haul.
Why Is Intermittent Fasting Best?
What I love about intermittent fasting is that it’s extremely simple. There is just ONE rule:
ONLY EAT WITHIN A TIMED WINDOW.
This is the only rule I need to stick to.
When it comes to what I’ve seen be successful, and what has helped me achieve my best, most fit body yet, is intermittent fasting and eating low carb, high fat.
I don’t need to count calories. I don’t need to count macros.
My goal each day is to eat starting at 11 am and have my last meal at 7 pm. During that time, I fill my plate with a bunch of healthy fats, a moderate amount of protein, and a little bit of carbohydrates.
Which Diet Is Best For You?
The best “diet” is the diet that doesn’t even feel like you’re on a diet. It’s the diet where you can actually stay on the diet plan to lose weight and keep it off forever!
If you know you can’t drink lemon juice all day or stuff your food into little containers all the time, then that diet isn’t right for you.
However, if you feel that portioning your food all day works best for you and is maintainable for life, great, do it!
If you feel that eating a low carb, high fat diet satisfies you the best, then do it!
If you feel that eating all of your food within a certain amount of time is great, then do it!
I’m not saying there is one right “diet” and one wrong “diet.”
It’s about finding what works best for you: How do you feel when eating that way? Do you have more energy? Do you have less cravings? Do you have less headaches and bloating?
I can honestly say that intermittent fasting and a high fat, low carb way of eating is sustainable for my lifetime. I’ve never felt better. I have more energy, clearer thinking, and I NEVER get cravings for junk food.
