Homemade Dry Shampoo – Simple and Natural

Make your own natural dry shampoo at home with just 1 simple ingredient!

Homemade Dry Shampoo - Simple and Natural. Make your own dry shampoo! It's so easy and uses just 1 ingredient! Saves time in the mornings!

I’ve been using dry shampoo for quite a while now.

Dry shampoo is a lifesaver when you’re a busy mom and you rarely get to have a shower! It’s also great when you like to exercise but don’t have time to wash and style your hair each day.

Dry shampoo also comes in handy when you start using natural shampoo and conditioner. I’ve switched to using natural/organic shampoo and conditioner recently, and I find that it doesn’t strip the oils from my hair like regular shampoo and conditioner do.

Hair is also easier to style when it’s not freshly washed. Just ask any hair dresser and they will tell you not to wash your hair before getting your hair styled for a wedding or event. This is where dry shampoo comes in handy. It absorbs the oil in your hair so that it doesn’t look greasy.

I used to used store-bought dry shampoo, but I actually read the ingredients one day and didn’t like what I saw. Things like liquified pertroleum gas and isobutane just to name a few. Personally, I don’t want to be spraying explosive chemicals on my head, thank you!

It’s so easy to make your own dry shampoo and it will cost you pennies.

You just need one simple ingredient – arrowroot powder!!

If you’re dark haired, you’ll need 2 ingredients: arrowroot powder and cocoa powder.

I also added a few drops of lavender essential oil to mine just to make it smell nice, but it’s not necessary.

I take an old, clean makeup brush, add a little dry shampoo to it, then dab it near my scalp where my the oily parts are. I then brush it through to blend it in.

BONUS TIP: Another great use for this homemade dry shampoo is to put it on your face to absorb any oil! Again, use a makeup brush to apply it to the oily parts of your face, like your forehead, nose, and chin.

Homemade Dry Shampoo – Simple and Natural

  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder (can use organic cornstarch) OR
  • 2 Tbsp arrowroot powder and 2 Tbsp cocoa powder (if you have dark hair)
  • 3 - 5 drops of essential oil (optional - I used lavender)
  • An old makeup brush

  1. Add arrowroot powder to a small bowl. Add drops of essential oil and mix with a spoon to combine.
  2. Store the mix in a small jar (I like to use small mason jars.)
  3. To apply, use an old makeup brush to dab some of the dry shampoo onto the oily parts of your scalp and hair. You can use the brush to rub it in or else use a comb to comb it through.
