One of the most common questions I get from my Drop a Dress Size challengers is “how many workouts should I be doing each day?”

I totally get it – when we first start a new program or start our weight loss journey, it can be tempting to go “balls to the wall” with our workouts. But I’ve seen many women burn out from going too hard, too fast.

So many women try to starve themselves and push their bodies, which ends up backfiring. Our bodies basically say, “Whoah, what are doing to me? I think I’m just going to stop helping you lose weight because it seems like you’re trying to kill me!” Trust me, your body doesn’t WANT to be treated that way.

This is why I only recommend doing one workout program at a time.

Whether that’s a Beachbody workout like I do, or another program that you do at a gym. ONE workout a day is enough!

I would rather you give your program 100% then do two programs and give them each 50% effort. Doing two programs at the same time can lead to overtraining, which leads to injury, burnout, and hormonal disruptions.

How To Lose Weight and Keep It Off

In my Drop a Dress Size groups, I really stress that weight loss isn’t quick. It didn’t take you a week to gain the weight, and it’s not going to take a week to get it off (although we all wish that were true!)

I like to call weight loss a journey rather than a destination. Through our journey, we are going to come across hills, valleys, forks in the road, distractions, etc. But as long as we keep putting one foot in front of the other and making small changes, we will succeed!

 

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when losing weight:

Be Realistic

When first starting a program, it can be easy to set unrealistic goals for ourselves. We are so excited to get started that we expect BIG changes week one. Setting a more realistic goal of losing a small amount of weight, for example, one pound per week, will help you stay on track better and not lose focus of your overall goal.

Don’t Overlook Nutrition

It’s so easy to say, “I’ll just work off that donut I ate earlier.” Nutrition is KEY in your weight loss success.

Exercise is important too, but nutrition plays the bigger role when it comes to your health and weight loss. And don’t forget to drink LOTS of water!

Have Support

Surround yourself with people who are going to support you and be your biggest cheerleader along the way. Celebrating your successes with those that support you will help you stay the course and push forward.

I love checking into my private Drop a Dress Size group each day and seeing the encouraging words from other challengers! It’s such an uplifting environment and one that helps us all stick to our goals.

Focus on Overall Health

Rather than trying to kill it in your workouts, try to focus on the big picture. Focus on your overall health and wellbeing rather than a workout or specific foods. Try to get 7 – 8 hours of sleep, reduce stress in your life, rest and recover your body. Managing these overall health goals has a lot more impact on your health.

For example, sometimes I’ll get women in my group who have had a baby recently. And if you’ve had a baby, you know that sleep just isn’t happening consistently. So rather than drilling them to get their workouts in no matter what, I tell them to STOP their intense workouts for now and focus on getting enough rest and good nutrition to fuel their bodies properly. The last thing us moms need is MORE stress on our body. More stress leads to a lack of weight loss, so it’s important to be kind and gentle to our body too.

Hybrid Workouts

If you really truly want to mix together two different types of programs, you can do that through a hybrid program.

Beachbody has many hybrid programs to choose from.

When I first started my weight loss journey, I stuck to just one program, ChaLEAN Extreme. After two rounds of that program, I decided to try Insanity. After doing a round of Insanity, I wanted to do a hybrid of ChaLEAN Extreme and TurboFire.

Since then, I’ve created many of my own hybrid programs. (Type “hybrid” into the search bar on this blog to see all of my hybrid programs.)

When doing a hybrid, it’s important to take a strategic approach in order to avoid injury or overtraining. For example, if you want to combine two programs, let’s say Insanity and something else, then don’t do The Asylum at the same time. Add something like Beachbody’s Yoga Retreat to help stretch out your sore muscles.

Remember that rest is part of training. When it comes to your workouts, quality is always better than quantity.

The BOTTOM LINE IS THIS: slow and steady is usually the best path to follow. This is how long-term, sustainable weight loss is best achieved.
